Weekend Work

Finally had the time to get some much-needed work done on the daily drivers this weekend.

On Saturday, the wagon got an oil change and valve adjustment. Then I retensioned the power steering belt - the plastic tensioner fell out in pieces years ago (not long after the trip to Vero Beach where the original pump died), so it's one of those things I have to monitor on the wagon. I also diagnosed the issue of the refrigerant compressor not turning on - turns out that I ham-fisted it when I reseated the electrical connector at the beginning of January. The system has a slow leak anyway (likely just due to the smaller molecule size of R-134 v/s R-12), so I was thinking that the system pressures were below spec. But when I jumpered the pressure switch leads, the clutch still didn't engage. 5 seconds to crawl beneath the car and reseat the connector so it actually makes contact, and we have working compressor. Gotta love free fixes.

On Sunday, I did the same to the 240D - oil change and valve adjustment. The 240D threw her A/C belt last month. The pulley spins free, but clutch does not engage. Fixing that one is going to be on the pricey side.

Oh well. Some days you eat the bar, some days the bar eats you.

This site's intentions are to detail the trials and tribulations of ownership and maintenance of our several Mercedes Benz diesel-engined automobiles - more specifically, the OM61x series engines as found in the w123 and w116 chassis. What started off as a hobby with a lone 240D has now turned into, well, an addiction of sorts. All of the cars we now own are Mercedes. Our newest car is 25 years old, and our oldest is 34.

We've been active members - and sometimes contributors - to the online MB community since roughly late 2000. MBDiesel.net exists as part photoblog, part hobby, and part soapbox. Most of the time, I'll post photo series of the more common repair jobs for the beginner DIYers out there. Occasionally, I can't do that because it takes too short of a time to actually do the repair than it does to photograph it. Sometimes I may just use this site to rant about car-related topics. You'll just have to come back every now and again and find out.
